Summary

The Senior Portfolio & Complex Assets Analyst is responsible for the strategic oversight, execution, and risk management of Vanguard Charitable’ s portfolio of held and complex assets. This role combines deep expertise in financial, legal, and operational domains to ensure that contributed assets—ranging from private equity and hedge funds to LLC/LLP interests and restricted stock—are managed in alignment with organizational standards, best practices, regulatory requirements, and philanthropic goals

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Oversight & Portfolio Management

  • Serve as primary point of contact for held and complex asset oversight, including valuation, performance analysis and tracking, redemption cycles, and liquidation activities.
  • Develop and document scalable transaction models and workflows to support efficiency and quality across the Held and Complex Assets program.
  • Build and enhance infrastructure to support the Held Assets program, including systems, processes, and reporting tools.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external accountants on valuation processes, financial reporting, and IRS compliance (Forms 8283, 8282, UBTI, etc.).
  • Manage redemptions, capital calls, and liquidity planning; ensure timely booking of new assets and application of fees, sale proceeds and distributions.

Complex Asset Transactions

  • Lead due diligence, underwriting and approval process for complex contributions, including financial, legal and tax risk assessments in collaboration with external counsel and advisors. Support donor communications.
  • Negotiate transfer and sale agreements, review entity documentation, and assess liquidation terms and risks.
  • Coordinate the full lifecycle of complex asset contributions—from intake and approval through liquidation and reporting.
  • Analyze UBTI exposure and coordinate mitigation strategies and account adjustments.

Stakeholder Engagement & Communication

  • Act as a liaison with donors, internal teams, and external partners to ensure transparency and alignment with objectives.
  • Train and mentor junior staff; promote consistent intake and evaluation processes.
  • Prepare and present reports for the Board of Trustees and internal leadership.
  • Participate in special projects and strategic business initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Law, or related field required; MBA or advanced degree preferred. CFA or CAIA certification is a plus.
  • Experience: Minimum 7–10 years in portfolio management, complex asset underwriting, or alternative investments. Experience in commercial lending or M&A is highly relevant.

Skills:

  • Deep understanding of complex and illiquid asset structures.
  • Strong legal and regulatory acumen, particularly in nonprofit and tax-exempt contexts.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and produce high-quality work under minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Salesforce, and SharePoint.
